  • Serious problems with fuel tank and MPG

By VanBriggle on Friday, April 24, 2020

    1.0
Most already know about the fuel tank issue affecting all 2019 and 2020 models of the RAV4 Hybrid. In some cases, such as mine, the tank only takes about 3 gallons (up to 5 on occasion). Since I have a serious commute each day, that means I have to fill up the tank about twice a day. The Toyota field services representative acknowledges this is a serious issue with no fix available, but Toyota National’s response to my buyback request was that this is a “normal operating characteristic.” So they are requiring I hire a lawyer and pay $10k plus to resolve the issue - so much for Toyota reputation and reliability. Worse, like many others here are reporting, they advertise it as getting 40 mpg, but after 5k mine averages 26.1. Toyota’s response to this is also that this is “normal.” Of course if they had let me know these were characteristics before buying the vehicle, I wouldn’t have purchased. So short story - Toyota defrauded me, and they’ve lost a customer of 30+ years.

Gas tank will not fill. Toyota is aware of the problem and does not have a fix.

First off, I like the SUV. It’s getting 38 mpg in Atlanta city traffic on hilly terrain and 36 mpg on the highway with aggressive driving. It’s also got good power. I take it camping and tow a small trailer with no issues. I really wanted the car so I paid a premium to get it. Now the bad, there is a major fuel tank issue Toyota is not addressing that is now a class action lawsuit. The tank only holds 8.5-10 gallons unless you put a lot of effort to fill it to it’s 14.5 Gallon capacity. You have to trickle fill the tank and it takes 10-15 minutes. It also appears to still be an issue with the 2020 and they aren’t addressing the issue. Also, they are still using cheap plastics on the bumpers that easily scratch and discolor. It’s a great car, just be aware of the problems and decide if you can live with it.
